What to expect during the Everest base camp trek?

Start the Everest base camp trekking with a thrilling short flight to Lukla. You will be traveling inside the Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu region. The trail goes through rhododendron and magnolia forests, following the Dudh Koshi river. Cross many suspension and wooden bridges on the way and spend nights in beautiful Sherpa villages.

Sherpas are also a huge highlight of the Everest base camp trek in Nepal. You must have heard the word Sherpa in adventure sports, clothing, etc. But do you know what Sherpa means?

Sherpa is one of the indigenous communities in Nepal that are local to the mountains, specifically the Everest region. They are the legendary mountaineers who help avid climbers reach the top of the highest mountains on Earth safely. On the Everest base camp trek, you will have an opportunity to spend time with these people and understand their lifestyle, beliefs, and culture.

The trail is dotted with beautiful villages where you will spend the nights. Likewise, visit ancient monasteries and stupas. In Khumjung monastery, you may even get to see the skull of a Yeti, as per locals. Many places are fastened with colorful prayer flags, which are there to protect and bless the locals and trekkers. We have two acclimatization days in our Everest base camp trek itinerary.

Visit the Hotel Everest View (3,962 m/13,000 ft) and Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m/16,732 ft) during acclimatization hikes in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,290 ft) and Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft), respectively. The interactions with the locals, occasionally sharing the trail with mules, and the serenity of the region make Everest base camp trekking more than just an adventurous trip.

The scenery changes at every turn. While Mount Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft) is the focal point of the Everest base camp trek, you will also get to see many other stunning mountains on this trek. Some of them are Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), Makalu (8,463 m/27,766 ft), Cho Oyu (8,188 m/26,864 ft), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), etc.

Toward the end of ascending, you will enjoy trekking on rocky gorges, glacier fields, and steep, rugged tracks. The trail follows the Khumbu Glacier moraine and hike to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft). The Kala Patthar (5,644 m/18,519 ft) is the highest point of our Everest Base Camp trek 14 days. The view of Everest from the top of the Kala Patthar (also known as black stone) is out of this world.

This is what your typical day looks like on the Everest Base Camp trek

Along the Everest Base Camp trail, you will meet many fellow trekkers in the peak trekking seasons- spring and autumn. Winter and summer/monsoon are off-times for trekking, so the trails are empty. Enjoy delicate bell sounds while passing by yaks and Jokpe (cross-breed of yak and cow). The trail is rugged and steep in some places.

Relish the fresh mountain air and calmness of nature. Do light stretching every day at the start and end of the day. You will have breakfast and dinner in the lodge you spend the night and lunch on the way. Likewise, we will take frequent short 5-minute breaks to breathe, enjoy, and recover throughout the day.

The scenery is at its best because of all the snowfall in the winter. The weather begins to get stable and warm. The trail is full of life thanks to all birds, animals, vegetation, and rhododendrons.
                              • Autumn: The months of September, October, and November are known as the autumn season in Nepal. This is the best time to travel to Nepal and trek to Everest Base Camp. It is also a festive season. The weather, climate, views, and environment all are fantastic.
                              • Summer/monsoon: Summer and monsoon seasons go together. June to August are off time for the EBC trek because of unstable weather, hot and humid climate, and heavy rainfall. The trails are not in good condition during this season and also involve a risk of landslides in the mountain area.
                              • Winter: Everest base camp trek in winter is possible with proper preparation and additional care. The trail is empty, and the views are breathtaking. However, the weather is quite unstable, and extreme cold makes trekking tougher than it already is.

                              • Hot shower: Hot showers are available in most lodges along the trail. You have to pay USD 5 to 7 for the service as the locals rely on wood or solar to warm the water.
