                          Useful Information

                          Difficulty

                          • Trek distance: The Gokyo valley trek covers approximately 80 kilometers. You will trek around 8 kilometers each day. Some days include up to 12 kilometers of walking, and while returning from Gokyo village to Namche Bazaar, you will cover 25 kilometers.
                          • Difficulty level: The Gokyo valley is a difficult trek. It is an entry-level offbeat trek in the Everest region. Both beginner and experienced trekkers can do this trek. Beginner trekkers have to be physically fit.
                          • Terrain: The Gokyo valley trek route is offbeat. The terrain is steep, rugged, and rocky. The trail begins with uneven terrain via dense forests. The later part of the trail goes past a landslide area and navigates the Ngozumpa Glacier moraines.
                          • Altitude sickness: The Gokyo valley trek starts from 2,846 m/9,337 ft (Lukla) and ascends up to 5,400 m/17,814ft (Gokyo Ri). From Kathmandu, at 1,400 meters (4,593 ft), you will gain significant altitude on this trek, so there is a risk of altitude sickness. You have to be careful and follow the precautions to avoid it. Be aware of the early signs like vomiting, headache, nausea, insomnia, difficulty in breathing, etc, and treat them on time to avoid altitude sickness.
                          • Preventive measures: With proper acclimatization, you can avoid altitude sicknesses during the Gokyo valley trek. We have two acclimatization days in our Gokyo valley trek 12 days itinerary. Likewise, keep yourself hydrated and maintain your pace. Eat good food and get plenty of rest.
                          • Trek preparation: To prepare for the Gokyo valley trek, you can exercise to build your core strength and stamina. Similarly, go on regular long walks to form the habit and practice mindfulness. Get your trekking clothes and gear ready on time. You can buy/rent most of them in Thamel, Kathmandu, at a better price.

The best time to do the Gokyo valley trek in Nepal

                          • Spring: Spring (March to May) is considered the best time for the Gokyo valley trek. During this season, the weather is generally stable, and the climate is mild. The rhododendron forests come alive with vibrant colors in the lower part of the trail. The temperatures range from 8°C to 17°C (46°F to 63°F) at lower altitudes and 2°C to 10°C (36°F to 50°F) at higher altitudes.
                          • Autumn: Another popular time for the Gokyo valley trekking is autumn (September to November). The weather is stable, and the skies are clear, offering breathtaking mountain views. Daytime temperatures range from 9°C to 18°C (48°F to 64°F) at lower elevations and can drop below freezing at higher altitudes during the night. It is also a festival time in Nepal.
                          • Summer/monsoon: Summer/monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended for trekking in the Gokyo Valley. The lower part of the trail experiences heavy rainfall, making the trails slippery and potentially dangerous. Landslides and leeches are also common during this period. The temperatures at lower elevations range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The precipitation and challenging trail conditions make this season a less favorable time for trekking.
                          • Winter: Winter (December to February) is a challenging time to trek in the Everest region due to the extreme cold. Daytime temperatures at lower altitudes range from 2°C to 12°C (36°F to 54°F). Likewise, the temperature can drop significantly at night. The higher altitudes, where Gokyo is located, sees sub-zero temperatures. Snow-covered trails can make trekking difficult, and some tea houses along the route may be closed.

                          Accommodation and Meals

                          • Rooms: Lodge accommodation is available during the Gokyo valley trek. The rooms are basic and often shared among two trekkers. Single rooms are only available on prior notice. There are clean beds and blankets in the room. We recommend carrying a sleeping bag for extra comfort and warmth.
                          • Washroom: Washrooms are mostly common. You may get a private washroom in some lodges. In the villages at lower elevations, you will get a western toilet, but the upper part of the trail usually has a squat toilet. Pack your toiletries, including toilet paper, hand soap, moisturizer, balms, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.
                          • Hot shower: Hot showers are available but often come with an additional cost. In higher altitudes, where resources are scarce, hot water availability may be limited. Check with the lodge owner about hot shower facilities and any associated charges.
                          • Charging: Lodges usually have paid charging facilities for electronic devices. You may have to pay up to USD 2-4 to charge your devices. Bring a portable power bank and spare batteries for the backup.
                          • WiFi: While some lodges may offer WiFi, especially in villages like Lukla and Namche Bazaar, the connectivity can be unreliable and slow. It's better to assume that WiFi may not be available or consistent throughout the trek. A better way to connect with your family is by using cellular data. So, get a tourist sim.
                          • Breakfast: Typical breakfast options include tea or coffee, eggs (boiled, fried, or omelet), Tibetan bread, porridge, chapati, thukpa, sandwiches, muesli, and pancakes.
                          • Lunch and dinner: For lunch and dinner, you will get a variety of options such as dal bhat, noodles, pasta, pizza, fried rice, momo, thukpa, chapati, curries, and other local specialties. Non-vegetarian options like meat and fish may also be available. The variety of food can decrease at higher altitudes due to logistical challenges.
                          • Drinking water and beverages: Lodges provide safe boiled drinking water. Trekkers are advised not to drink untreated tap water. Use a water purification tablet to treat water. Additionally, a variety of hot and cold beverages, including tea, coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks, and local herbal teas, are available for purchase at the lodges.

                          Additional Information

                          • Travel insurance: Having comprehensive travel insurance is essential for the Gokyo valley trek. The travel insurance should cover emergency medical expenses, helicopter evacuation, trip cancellations, and loss of personal belongings. Ensure that the policy explicitly includes coverage for high-altitude trekking and activities.
                          • Passport and visa: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the day you enter Nepal. You can obtain a tourist visa upon arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or designated entry points. Check the official website of the Nepalese embassy for the latest visa requirements and fees.
                          • Money exchange: Carry Nepalese Rupees (NPR) for your expenses during the trek. While major towns like Kathmandu have ATMs everywhere, there are only a handful of ATMs in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. Exchange currency at authorized exchange counters and banks or withdraw cash from ATMs. Credit cards are not widely accepted in remote areas, so cash is the primary mode of payment.
                          • Tips: Tipping is a common practice in Nepal, especially in the tourism industry. It's customary to tip trekking staff, such as guides and porters. The amount varies, but a general guideline is around 10% to 15% of the total trek cost.
                          • Luggage: Pack wisely and keep your luggage lightweight. Carry a backpack for your essentials during the trekking, and pack heavy clothing and trek gear in a duffel bag. Clearly label your bags with your name and contact information.
                          • Personal expense: Besides the cost of the trek, budget for personal expenses such as snacks, extra meals, beverages, souvenirs, and additional services not covered by the trek package. Have some extra funds for unforeseen circumstances or optional activities.
